Where would you normally use timber stair newel posts ?
As the post at the top of a staircase (see diagram to the right for more info) where balustrading for the top landing is required.
Join to an extension post to get the desired overall length required.

How should you finish it ?
If looking for a natural finish, then a clear lacquer will be fine; or you can use a stain to achieve your desired colour then use a clear lacquer to finish it off.
